At the 25th Meeting of States Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), held at the UN Headquarters in New York on 10 June 2015, Dr. Nenad Leder, Acting Director of the Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia, was elected as member of the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS). Dr. Nenad Leder won 112 votes of the 114 votes of States Parties present (with two abstentions), where a two-thirds majority (75 votes) was required. His term of office commencing from 10 June 2015 expires on 15 June 2017.

Nenad Leder was born in Komiža (Vis Island) on 8 April 1958. He received his primary and secondary education in Split, and completed his higher education at the Faculty of Science of the University of Zagreb, Department of Physics. He graduated in 1981 and obtained his degree in Physics, field of study Geophysics with Meteorology. In April 1988 he received a master’s degree defending the master’s thesis under the title “Influence of Atmosphere on Forced Sea Level Oscillations on Eastern Coast of the Adriatic Sea”. He earned his doctor’s degree in October 2004 with the dissertation entitled "Barotropic and Baroclinic Waves in Wider Area of Lastovo Channel".

His first employment was with the Hydrographic Institute in 1982. Between 2000 and 2004 he performed the duties of the Head of Oceanographic Department, and between 2004 and 2014 he was Assistant Director for Oceanography and Scientific Development.

On 5 March 2014 Nenad Leder was appointed as Director of the Hydrographic Institute by the Government of the Republic of Croatia. Since 3 July 2015 he has performed the duty of Acting Director of the Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia under the Act on Amendments to the Hydrographic Activity Act (NN 71/14).

He is author and co-author of 136 scientific and professional papers, 87 of which have been published in international peer-reviewed scientific journals/proceedings. He has contributed to more than 250 studies and project reports of the Hydrographic Institute in the field of hydrography, marine geophysics and geology, and oceanography.

Moreover, he has been involved in 18 international and national research and professional projects.
