Extremely high sea levels in Split area

Portal of Operational Oceanography, through web application AdriaticSea online, provides an insight into the current state of the sea and help us understand the influence of weather on sea level in the Adriatic.

In the last few days, we can witness to pronounced sea level variations along the Croatian coast. The official HHI publication “Tide Tables” gives predictions of the normal rhythm of tides, while the results of actual measurements from our tide gauges, like those in Split, are much different.

On Thursday 19 February 2026, a difference of over 70 cm above mean sea level was recorded in Split. Such "excess" of the sea is not accidental, but it is a direct consequence of low air pressure, and a strong scirocco with high waves.

In the context of climate change, such extreme situations become more frequent. Data monitoring enables us to understand how global sea level rise, combined with extreme weather, directly threatens our infrastructure, seafronts, historical centres, and property. Follow us on:
