Visit by students of the Natural Sciences School in Split

Students of the School of Natural Sciences in Split (2nd “M” class) visited the Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia (HHI) on 8 April 2026, accompanied by their professors Marijan Anđelko Hadjina and Ilenko Abramušić. These students belong to the first generation in Split to be enrolled in the Meteorological Technician programme. This visit continues the long-standing tradition of regular school visits and professional training for secondary school students in the fields of work routinely carried out at HHI.

The visit was hosted by Marta Jelenčić, MSc in geology, and Marko Mlinar, MSc in physics (specialised in geophysics). The students gained first-hand insight into methods of measurement in marine natural sciences. They were introduced to the operation of the Split harbour tide gauge (part of the permanent sea level measurement network in the Republic of Croatia), as well as the importance of maintaining long-term sea level records. This was followed by a tour of the Hydrographic Museum where the students learned about the development of instruments and equipment, as well as the ways in which data have been used in oceanography over the past two centuries. The third part of the visit included a presentation on modern methods of measurement and data analysis in oceanography and meteorology at HHI. In addition to current projects, the presentation also covered the preparation of instruments for future measurements. As these activities represent only one part of the Institute’s wide-range and complex operations, the students
were also given an overview of the broader context and significance of such measurements for the Institute as a whole and for the users of its products.

We would like to thank the students for their visit and for their active participation.
