On 22 May 2026, pupils of Visoka Primary School visited the Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia (HHI), accompanied by Mare Marasović Dundić, expert pedagogical associate, Ana Šćepanović, primary school teacher, Anita Mustapić, biology and chemistry teacher, and Marija Parlov, geography teacher. The visit formed part of the STeam project, led by Boris Jokić and Zrinka Ristić Dedić in cooperation with A1. This year’s theme, “How Does the Sea Speak to Us?”, explores the many ways in which people can “communicate” with the sea and how various measurements and data can help reveal its characteristics and behaviour.

During the visit, Marko Mlinar, MSc in Physics and Marta Jelenčić, MSc in Geology from the Institute’s Oceanology Department introduced the pupils to the work of the Croatian Hydrographic Institute, including the methods, processes and instruments used to collect marine data, such as waves measurements, sea currents and other relevant oceanographic parameters.

The pupils also visited the Hydrography Museum, where they learned more about the historical development of hydrography and related sciences, as well as the history of the Institute itself.

This visit continues the long-standing practice of organised school and faculty students’ visits to the Hydrographic Institute, aiming to encourage their interest in science and the practical application of knowledge. It also helps familiarise them with the important role that hydrographic and oceanographic research plays in understanding the sea and in protecting coastal areas.
