Empowering Women in Hydrography – project by IHO and Canada

5/4/2023 11:15:00 AM

As part of the Third Session of the IHO Assembly in Monaco, an event connected to the project "Empowering Women in Hydrography” (EWH) was held on 1 May 2023.  This project is also a global effort led by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) and Canada that seeks to initiate, organize, and track a series of activities and initiatives which will enable more women to participate equitably in the field of hydrography and to assume leadership roles within the hydrographic community.

In the global context, there is an imbalance between men and women in participation in the areas related to maritime affairs, including in the field of hydrography. The project encourages the activities of women who will potentially contribute to new perspectives, skills and creativity in the world of hydrographic science and provide women with the opportunity to demonstrate and develop their abilities to the same extent as their male counterparts.

The EWH project seeks to initiate and organize activities and initiatives which will enable more women to participate equitably in the field of hydrography and to assume leadership roles within the hydrographic community.

As the EWH project aims to encourage women's ability to excel in their careers and reach higher-level roles, the HHI supports this project and can boast not only a large representation of women employed in professional departments (cartography, navigation, hydrography, and geology), but also a woman at the head of the Institute, who is also the Chair of the largest IHO regional commission – Mediterranean and Black Seas Hydrographic Commission (MBSHC) and representing Republic of Croatia at the IHO Council.
