Adriatic 11 - Presentation of ADRIAGIS application and Study on Places of Refuge

Regional staff exercise on marine ecological crisis “Adriatic 11”, attended by representatives of six Adriatic countries (Republic of Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Greece, and Italy), and representatives of the European Commission and European Maritime Safety Agency, was held in Split on 18 October 2011.

The exercise was organised by the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, together with the Ministry of Defence, and co-sponsored by the Kingdom of Norway, with the aim of strengthening regional cooperation in case of large-scale oil pollution of the Adriatic Sea.

First part of the exercise included a two-day seminar attended by representatives of European institutions concerned with the issues of response to accidental marine pollution (EMSA, EU MIC), while the second part included a demonstration exercise that took place on Thursday.

First day included a presentation, given by the HHI director Zvonko Gržetić, of the ADRIAGIS application for selection of potential places of refuge for ships in distress in the territorial sea of the Republic of Croatia, depending on the type of ship and cargo, and weather conditions. Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia prepared the Study on Places of Refuge for the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure. After the presentation, all the participants visited the museum of the Hydrographic Institute preserving the valuable heritage of the hydrographic activity in the Adriatic dating back to 1860.
