On 17 September 2026, the Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia celebrates the 35th anniversary of its operations within the independent and sovereign Republic of Croatia.
Succeeding a tradition of hydrographic activity spanning 220 years on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, the Institute is the cornerstone of hydrography in the Croatian Adriatic. Its core mission is to provide hydrographic and navigational safety for vessels, aimed at safeguarding human life and property at sea, protecting the marine environment, and contributing to the sustainable management of maritime areas.
To the wider public, the Institute is best known for its official navigational charts and publications – such as sailing directions, pilots, and nautical almanacs – as well as the dissemination of maritime safety information and radio navigational warnings.
By adhering to international hydrographic standards, conducting hydrographic surveys, producing and maintaining official navigational charts and publications, and developing digital data services, the Institute continually enhances the safety of navigation and fosters the advancement of modern hydrography in the Republic of Croatia.
Since 1995, the Hydrographic Institute has represented the Republic of Croatia as a full member of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), actively participating in the wider international hydrographic community. Alongside its core responsibilities, the Institute utilizes its technical and professional expertise to contribute to numerous national and international development and scien tific research projects.
Today, in an era of intensive digital transformation within the maritime sector and the development of new international standards, the Institute continues to adapt its products and services to meet the modern needs of mariners and other marine users.
Marking 35 years of operation in the independent and sovereign Republic of Croatia is a significant milestone. It stands as a testament to the continuity, expertise, and responsibility invested in a service that remains critical to navigational safety and the understanding of Croatian waters.
