In the joint organization by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), the Hydrographic Commission for the Mediterranean and the Black Sea (MBSHC) and the Office of Navigation, Hydrography and Oceanography of the Turkish Navy (TN-ONHO), the “Introduction to S100 & S1XX Products and Data Conversion, Validation and Release of S100 Products” training was held in Istanbul for the member states of the MBSHC from 02 to 05 December 2025.

Mendi Čala and Katarina Klepo, HHI’s Cartographic Department colleagues took part in the training. During the four-day programme, through lectures and practical workshops, participants got an overview of the IHO’s new S-100 standard as well as the overview of relevant product specifications based on S-100. The emphasis of the workshop was on learning to prepare and produce the next generation of IHO’s S-101 Electronic Navigational Charts (ENC). 

The participants worked with Teledyne CARIS software in various demos and practical tasks using the example data sets with the possibility to perform additional tests and checks. This event also provided HHI colleagues with the opportunity to exchange experience and knowledge with colleagues from other hydrographic organisations.

By participating in this training, HHI colleagues have further improved their knowledge on S-100 and S-101 standards and their practical skillsets required for future production of S-101 ENC, thereby contributing to the Institute’s operational and professional readiness to implement new IHO standards.
