Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia Launches New Geoportal on the Occasion of World Hydrography Day
On the occasion of World Hydrography Day, observed annually on 21 June, the Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia is pleased to announce the launch of its new geoportal – a modern digital platform designed to enhance access to spatial data within the Institute’s domain.
Established by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), World Hydrography Day aims to raise awareness of the vital role of hydrography in supporting safe navigation, environmental protection, marine spatial planning, and the sustainable development of the blue economy. It also serves to highlight the importance of hydrographic services and products in both national and international contexts.
The theme for World Hydrography Day 2025, "Seabed Mapping: Enabling Ocean Action," underscores the essential contribution of hydrographic data—particularly seabed mapping—in enabling effective marine governance, conservation, and the sustainable use of ocean resources. This theme aligns with IHO Strategic Goals, especially the commitment to increasing the use of hydrographic data for the benefit of society and to actively engaging in global initiatives dedicated to ocean sustainability.
In line with these objectives, the launch of the new geoportal represents a significant milestone in the digital transformation of the Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia. The geoportal offers an intuitive and user-friendly interface, providing access to a wide range of thematic layers including nautical charts, bathymetric data, seabed features, coastal infrastructure, and maritime installations.
The platform is open to all users, enabling efficient search, visualization, and, where applicable, download of selected spatial datasets. Advanced tools are available for measuring distances, identifying coordinates, and filtering data by theme. Notably, the latest data releases include marine toponyms and comprehensive offshore infrastructure datasets, further enriching the Institute’s publicly available hydrographic information.
The Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia invites all stakeholders – from maritime professionals and researchers to public authorities and the general public – to explore the new geoportal and discover the wealth of authoritative data compiled and maintained in support of navigation, marine science, and broader societal needs.
