As part of a Project day dedicated to the theme “Natural Disasters”, fifth-year pupils of Mejaši Primary School in Split visited the Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia on 9 March 2026, accompanied by their teachers Jelena Nakićen and Seida Kaleb.

During the visit, the pupils had the opportunity to learn about the operations and work of the Hydrographic Institute and to find out more about how the Institute, by means of collecting and providing information, contributes to maritime disaster and accidents prevention through its regular activities. They were also introduced to the Institute’s role in emergency situations, such as accidents and potential disasters, through its participation in the work of the County Operational Centre of Split-Dalmatia County.

The pupils also showed considerable interest in the topic of climate change. During their visit to the Hydrography Museum, they were introduced to the historical development of hydrography and related scientific disciplines, as well as to the history and development of the Institute itself.

This visit continues the long-standing practice of organised school and faculty students’ visits to the Hydrographic Institute, aiming to encourage their interest in science and the practical application of knowledge. It also helps familiarise them with the important role that hydrographic and oceanographic research plays in understanding the sea and in protecting coastal areas.
