The Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia marks World Maritime Day 2026

World Maritime Day 2026 is celebrated on 24 September under the theme "From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence". With this theme, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) emphasises the importance of translating international rules, standards, and policies into concrete actions and results within the maritime sector. This theme will be observed throughout 2026 and 2027.

In this process, reliable, accurate, and timely hydrographic data constitute one of the fundamental prerequisites for safe navigation.

From hydrographic surveying of the seabed, data collection and processing to data verification and interpretation, and finally the production of official navigational products and digital maritime information – every step is part of a process translating international standards into actionable information for real-world sailing conditions.

It is precisely in this area that the Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia (HHI) bridges the gap between international standards and their practical application.

By implementing International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) standards, cutting-edge hydrographic surveying technologies, and new digital data models, HHI transforms hydrographic data into reliable, standardised, and interoperable information designed to ensure safer and more efficient navigation.

A central role in this digital transformation is played by S-100 – the IHO Universal Hydrographic Data Model, developed as the foundation for a new generation of digital maritime products and services.

Under the S-100 framework, products such as S-101 Electronic Navigational Charts, S-102 Bathymetric Surface Data, S-104 Water Level Information, and S-111 Surface Current Data are being developed. Their interoperable use will provide an enhanced, more dynamic display of information crucial for navigational decision-making and safety at sea.

As the national hydrographic authority, HHI contributes to creating a safe, reliable, and sustainable maritime environment through its professional work, hydrographic research, the development of official digital maritime products, and the adoption of new international standards.

Moving from policy to practice in hydrography means turning internationally agreed standards into accurate, verified, and usable information upon which safe navigation can be built.

Because behind every safe voyage stand reliable data, verified information, international standards, and the expertise of the people who put them into practice.
