HHI acquires new waverider buoy

10/12/2021 3:10:00 PM

To improve the hydrographic activity and to continue a long tradition of measuring wind generated surface waves in the Adriatic, the Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia (HHI) has acquired a new directional waverider buoy. The waverider buoy is capable of measuring the height, direction and period of wind generated waves and the sea surface temperature.

The buoy is additionally equipped with a solar panel which increases its autonomy and ensures continuous measurements for two years. Real-time measurement results will be available online at www.hhi.hr Adriatic Sea – Operational Oceanography Portal.

HHI waverider network:
Continuous wave measurements are currently performed at three locations (Dubrovnik, Split, and Rijeka).
The ultimate objective is to increase the number of wave measurement locations and establish the permanent waverider network. Wave measurements are performed in order to create the conditions for safe transport of people and goods in the Croatian part of the Adriatic, management of sea and seabed resources, as well as for preserving and protecting the environment.
